Players win cash at Bank Windhoek beach volleyball

SWAKOMUND, 20 MAR (NAMPA) – Hundreds of volleyball lovers gathered at Mole Beach in Swakopmund over the weekend to witness the Bank Windhoek Open Beach Volleyball Tournament.
Apart from the games on Saturday and Sunday, visitors and residents also flocked here to cool off in the hot weather.
Thirty teams of two competed in the fifth edition’s five categories: Men, Women, Youth, Social, and Four-A-Side.
The highest prize of N.dollars 3 000 went to teammates Lucas Maurer and Toni Hellmoth in the Men’s category.
Professional player Hellmoth from Germany said Namibia is a beautiful place and Swakopmund’s weather is perfect for training.
“I am enjoying my stay and I am privileged to be here,” said Hellmoth, who is in Namibia for the first time.
The Women’s category was won by Lanina Weiland and Julia Laggner. They also won N.dollars 3 000.
Second and third place winners in the Men and Women’s categories received N.dollars 2 000 and 1 000, respectively.
The Cheeters team from Erongo Region won the Four-A-Side category.
They were rewarded N.dollars 2 000, while the second and third place winners received N.dollars 1 500 and N.dollars 1 000, respectively.
In the Youth category, the first prize of N.dollars 1 000 went to Yannick Bonn and Lara Lusse.
Martin Schurz and Florian Allers took N.dollars 1 000 for the first prize in the Social category.
The second and third-place winners of the Youth and Social categories received N.dollars 600 and N.dollars 400, respectively.
Namibian Beach Volleyball Director, James Verrinder said various regions showed interest in expanding volleyball to their regions.
“We are looking into hosting more beach volleyball across the country, starting with Rundu due to the growing popularity of the sport in that town.”
Speaking to Nampa at the event, Brand Merchandiser and Promotions Consultant at Bank Windhoek Esmond Fraser said the total sponsorship was N.dollars 35 000.
“This is good because we bring the games to the people.”
