Schulz out as German Social Democrat head; Nahles gets nod to succeed

Berlin (dpa) - The convulsions in Germany's Social Democrat party (SPD) took a further turn on Tuesday as failed chancellor candidate Martin Schulz announced his immediate resignation as party head.
Moments later, the party's top leadership announced that it had given its backing to Andrea Nahles, who heads the party's legislative delegation, to take over as chairwoman. She now awaits an election by the full party membership on April 22.
