A general view of an empty stall at a market in Uvira on December 11, 2025. In Uvira, a town in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), those who were unable to flee now wait anxiously to learn their fate at the hands of the M23 armed group, backed by the Rwandan army, which on Thursday tightened its grip on the city.
The M23 offensive against the town of several hundred inhabitants, launched in early December shortly before the signing of a “peace” agreement between Rwanda and the DRC under Washington’s auspices, was described on Wednesday by Burundian diplomacy as a “slap” delivered to the United States.
This latest breakthrough by the armed group and its Rwandan allies is aimed in particular at depriving Kinshasa of military support from Bujumbura, according to experts and security sources. (Photo by AFP)
