17 August 2026, North Rhine-Westphalia, Monschau: Plumes of smoke drift over the massive wildfire in the High Fens. Photo: Kevin Schößler/dpa
This photograph shows smoke emanating from burnt soil and vegetation during a wildfire at the Hautes Fagnes (High Fens) nature reserve near Baelen, south east of Brussels, on August 17, 2026. Rain started falling in Belgium on August 17, 2026 to help its fight against the country's biggest modern-day wildfire that has devastated some 3,000 hectares (7,500 acres) of the High Fens park on the border with Germany. Some 500 firefighters and troops are battling the blaze that has sent a huge cloud of black smoke across the region into neighbouring Germany and France. Scientists have long warned that climate change caused by human use of fossil fuels will make periods of drought more intense and longer-lasting, creating the ideal conditions for wildfires.
