(FILES) Hamas arab relations chief Khalil al-Hayya holds a press conference during a visit to the Syrian capital Damascus on October 19, 2022 for the first time since the Palestinian Islamist group severed ties with Syria a decade ago. Hamas is preparing internal elections in the coming months to renew its leadership after most of its chiefs were killed in the war with Israel, sources within the movement told AFP on January 12. Khalil al-Hayya, 65, “has held leadership positions within Hamas since at least 2006,” according to the profile dedicated to him by the NGO Counter Extremism Project (CEP).
Originally from Gaza, he is considered the point man for negotiations with Israel through mediator countries—Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. He enjoys the support of the movement’s military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades. (Photo by Louai Beshara / AFP)
