AFP presents a reportage by Philippe LOPEZ of 29 pictures taken in Carcans, south-western France, on January 14, 2026. Recycled christmas trees are placed on dunes as part of an ecological engineering project managed by the National Forestry Office (ONF) to combat coastal erosion by trapping windblown sand and promoting the growth of native vegetation like marram grass and sea spurge, natural dune-stabilizing plants that protect the coastline from rising sea levels and increasingly frequent storms.
