Rateb was injured in Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip on June 28, 2025, while visiting his grandfather's tent when a nearby car was bombed by the Israeli military as he, his mother, and his brother were walking past. His mother and brother were killed, and his leg was was damaged and later amputated. Rateb suffers from a misaligned prosthetic leg and rarely uses it because it is uncomfortable, finding his crutches lighter and more comfortable. The war was sparked by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people.
