A bronze statue of Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician Walter Luebcke, who was assassinated by a neo-Nazi extremist on June 2, 2019, stands in front of the Konrad Adenauer Haus, the CDU headquarters in Berlin, on December 3, 2025, a day after the inauguration of the memorial. The temporary memorial, organised by activists of the Center for Political Beauty (Zentrum für Politische Schoenheit), has come under sharp criticism by CDU leaders. According to the organisers, the elaborate memorial project was approved by the Berlin-Mitte district office for two years. Luebcke, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's party who backed her pro-migrants stance, was shot dead by Stephan Ernst, a supporter of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) in 2019, in what was believed to be Germany's first far-right political assassination since World War II. According to the Center, the memorial is a place against forgetting and against the normalization of the AfD. (Photo by John MACDOUGALL / AFP)
