This photograph shows fished mackerels in Brest, western France, on December 11, 2025. Fleeing climate warming, the Atlantic mackerel has migrated north, only to find itself trapped by overfishing against a backdrop of geopolitical disputes. Its population has collapsed and now threatens the survival of numerous fisheries. EU fisheries ministers are due to meet on December 11 and 12 for discussions, notably on a comprehensive decision on next year’s fishing quotas, including for mackerel, a sensitive matter for certain countries, including France.
