The controlled sinking of two 80-meter-long barges loaded with rocks is under way on the section of the Danube adjacent to the Paks Nuclear power Plant near Dunaszentbenedek, Hungary, on August 18, 2026. Hungary has so far been able to avoid a complete shutdown of its only nuclear plant, Paks, whose four reactors are cooled by the Danube. But the Hungarian government has ordered the construction of a submerged wall, or weir, to try to control flows nears the plant. Two 80-metre barges are sunk to raise the water level. Paks, whose output usually covers around a third of Hungary's electricity needs, has been partially shut down since July 2026 due to a drought scorching Europe that has caused the Danube river to fall to record lows.
