(FILES) This underwater photograph taken on April 18, 2023 shows Sargassum on the shore in Capesterre de Marie Galante. Fourteen years after the first sargassum "invasion" on the shores of Guadeloupe and Martinique, a new influx of the seaweed has emerged in the past weeks. Collecting, treating or deviating the masses of seaweed, which release toxic gas when left out to rot, is a costly affair for local communities. The European Union is therfore examining possibilities of monetizing saragassum, exploring potential uses as biofuels, cosmetics, or fertilizer, among others. (Photo by Olivier MORIN / AFP)
