ONGWEDIVA, 28 AUG (NAMPA) - Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, has emphasised the need for the workforce to evolve alongside technology in order to boost productivity in the workplace.
Theofelus made the remarks during the MTC-OATF Tech Hub Conference held at Ongwediva on Wednesday, saying while technology increases productivity, it is ultimately the human element that drives innovation and ensures sustainable growth.
“By reskilling people, we can safeguard jobs even as we reengineer business processes to be more tech enabled,” she said.
The minister further stressed the importance of developing policies that not only address local needs, but also align with global standards. She said efforts are underway to draft key legislative frameworks to secure Namibia’s position in the global technology arena.
She encouraged people to consider the MTC-OATF Tech Hub Conference as a launch pad for tech-enabled business process reengineering within their organisations.
Theofelus also indicated that the Cybercrime Bill, aimed at addressing the increasing threats posed by cybercriminals, is in the drafting stage.
Meanwhile, the Data Protection Bill is now before the Cabinet Committee on Legislation.
After extensive consultations, major components of the bill have been aligned with international best practices such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union.
MTC Chief Executive Officer Licky Erastus indicated that the MTC-OATF Tech Hub Conference is aimed at fostering dynamic and efficient tech solutions, prioritising engagement and networking, and granting institutions access to a broader range of knowledge, skills and expertise.
Erastus stated that by fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing, the pace of technological advancement can be accelerated to ensure that Namibia remains at the forefront of innovation.
“To harness the full potential of technology, we need fit for purpose digital solutions,” he said.
Erastus also stressed the need for digital solutions tailored to Namibia’s unique challenges.
