NKURENKURU, 29 JAN (NAMPA) - Members of the Namibian Police Force in the Kavango West Region have said they are ready to fight Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as they attended a two-day training session for police officers on the National Policy and the Child Care and Protection Act at the NamPol Regional Headquarters in Nkurenkuru on Monday.

NamPol Commander for the Kavango West Region, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo, officiated the training, stating that its aim was to equip the men and women in uniform with the knowledge needed to handle various cases of gender-based violence in the community and the region.

Sakuwa-Neo noted that GBV continues to plague society despite several educational and awareness campaigns conducted by the Ministry of Gender, the police, and other stakeholders.

“Statistics on GBV cases are skyrocketing, particularly assaults, rape, passion killings, and so on. Our society has closed its ears and does not listen to the cries of a girl child, and it is disheartening to read reports on our national daily crime platforms,” said Sakuwa-Neo.

Sakuwa-Neo further stated that police officers are also victims of GBV and, at the same time, perpetrators of such crimes.

“The same community we are entrusted to protect, we end up abusing. It is a shame and an embarrassment to the organisation,” she said.

Speaking at the same event, Deputy Commissioner Abner Agas said that violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent and persistent human rights violations, disturbing peace and stability in homes and society at large.

“The challenges that we face in our community require us to approach our roles with empathy, knowledge, and an unwavering resolve to support and protect those who often cannot protect themselves,” said Agas.

Agas further stated that law enforcement officers have a role to play, not only in responding to incidents but also in creating a safer and more supportive environment that empowers individuals to seek help.

“It is important to note that most GBV crimes are frequently underreported in many areas, and individuals who come forward often experience stigma, intimidation, and a lack of assistance,” he said.
