NKURENKURU, 26 NOV (NAMPA) - A total of 225 Namibian Police Force (NamPol) officers have been deployed at 175 polling points across the Kavango West Region’s 12 constituencies.
This is according to Kavango West Regional Commander, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo, who indicated to Nampa on Monday that the region’s security forces will depart for their respective polling stations on Tuesday.
“Members are well trained by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) and were also briefed this morning. They know their duties and responsibilities once at the polling stations,” said Sakuwa-Neo.
Meanwhile, during the briefing of police officers who were being deployed, Sakuwa-Neo highlighted some of the challenges that they faced during the last registration process two months ago, saying there were police officers who were not acting professionally.
“As a trained police officer one is supposed to establish the highest order of professionalism and this is expected from you as you depart today and for others who will follow tomorrow,” she said.
Another issue she raised is of police officers consuming alcohol while on duty.
“We got a report from ECN supervisors saying that some police officers were just drinking and fighting among themselves. This time it must be different, we must behave in a professional way and always listen to the supervisors on the ground because they’re there to receive your complaints first,” said the commander.
Sakuwa-Neo noted that 27 November is a public holiday and the sale of alcohol is prohibited and called on members of the public to cast their votes sober.
The commander further urged the public to exercise their democratic right by ensuring that they turn up to cast their vote.
“Election is a very important undertaking because it is everyone’s right and choice to elect the leaders of their choice, so it will be very good if every person votes,” she noted.
