WINDHOEK, 16 DEC (NAMPA)- High Court Judge David Munsu on Monday dismissed the bail application for Tamson Hatuikulipi, one of the suspects arraigned in the Fishrot matter.
Hatuikulipi had lodged the bail application based on new facts including, that he has been in custody since November 2019. Hatuikulipi through his lawyer Mbanga Siyomundji argued that since incarceration, he has not been criminally charged with other crimes and that his financial situation continues to deteriorate while in custody.
Hatuikulipi was arrested alongside former fisheries minister Bernard Esau, who is also his father-in-law, his cousin James Hatuikulipi, former Justice Minister Sakeus Shanghala, former Fishcor Chief Executive Officer Mike Nghipunya, Ricardo Gustavo, Pius Mwatelula, Nigel van Wyk, Phillipus Mwapopi and Otneel Shuudifonya.
The suspects allegedly accepted bribes from Icelandic fishing company Samherji in exchange for fishing quotas.
The state is objecting to granting bail due to the serious nature of the crimes, the fear of abscondment and the fear of interference with state witnesses.
“It is common cause that millions were paid to his [Hatuikulipi] accounts. As I understand the case, the issue is not that millions were paid to his entity but the failure to account to the public,” Judge Munsu remarked.
